A Different Look at Advent | Wednesday Recap, 12.12

Set List: Come Now Is the Time to Worship, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, O’ Come All Ye Faithful So This is Christmas

Scripture Used: Luke 1.26-2.20 (The Message); Psalm 89; Isaiah 9.2-7; Philippians 2.5-8

Additional Resources Used: What is Advent? (Gangam Style) video; Nativity Christmas Trivia Game; Mr. Bean Nativity Scene; The Book of Uncommon Prayer.

Evening in a Sentence: Building on last week’s exploration of Advent, we challenged students to see the Christmas story in a different light.

Element of Fun: Fellowship time over dinner. Nativity Trivia Game. Two YouTube videos.

What Worked: There was a lot to celebrate tonight. We had a large turnout, including one new student, and two that we have not seen in a while (on since this past summer and the other since last spring). The videos were well-received and the Nativity challenge was a blast. The dumpster service from The Book of Uncommon Prayer really challenged students to see the Christmas narrative without our clean, modern lens. There were a lot of questions and some fantastic conversation amongst the students following our dumpster service. Singing the Christmas carols was a lot of fun for just about everyone here. The Take-Home cards were a good idea for most students.

What Needs Work: The Nativity trivia challenge seemed to run a little long. A couple of students were not dressed warm enough for the Dumpster Service, which may have distracted them from the message.

Summary: This week was a great follow-up to last week’s exploration of Advent. Students got to see some of our modern myths and misconceptions about the Christmas narrative debunked and were given an opportunity to see the birth of our Savior in a fresh light.
