Tuesday Night Recap – September 27, 2011

Lesson Title: How to Read the Bible

Set List: No Greater Love (Walker), Better is One Day (Redman), I Will Follow (Tomlin)

Scripture Used: Hebrews 5.12-14; 1 Peter 2.1-3; 2 Timothy 3.16-17; John 5.38-40; Acts 17.11; 1 Corinthians 7.36; 1 Thessalonians 5.22; Philippians 4.7-9

Evening in a Sentence: There is more to reading the Bible than just opening it up and flipping through the pages…

What Worked: On the whole, the evening was solid from beginning to end. We were able to gather and pray for the evening before we started, we moved through on our schedule (for the most part, anyway), and music (though it was just me) was very energetic tonight. The lesson topic was dense, but I seemed to be able to communicate the major points to our students, and we even had a handful of great questions and interesting observations. Especially questions about the different methods of translating 1 Corinthians 7.36. One student asked whether or not these different readings go against the command not to add or subtract anything from Scripture. There was a palpable sense of hunger from our students tonight, and it seemed as if LIFE Groups were just too short. I know that at least half of the groups came out with an action plan to help one another spend time in Scripture this coming week.

What Needs Work: We had too many rabbit trails. One student in particular has great questions and wants to share what God has done in his life, but he picks times to pipe up when it distracts us from the main topic. I did try to put too much lesson into our available time tonight, and that shortened our time in LIFE Groups.

Summary: Great night for the introduction of our monthly series. It should grow as we get into more lessons.
