A Bit of Encouragement for Youth Leaders

As I drove back from Ohio this week, I was listening to an old (read, John James era) Newsboys CD (Going Public), and was hit across the face with the words to one of the songs. I felt compelled to share them with you in the hopes of encouraging you as they have encouraged me. And while I write this post to Youth Leaders specifically, these words can encourage many other callings.

When You Called My Name – by Steve Taylor and Peter Furler

I want to preach the Word, they want massages
I check chapter and verse, they check their watches
I spy another yawn, I might as well be gone, let’s stand and say “Amen”
Some days I must admit, I still don’t get this
Could be it’s time to quit, when days get like this
I slip into the night, then stumble towards the light, wake up and try again

When You called my name, I didn’t know how far the calling went
When You called my name, I didn’t know what that word really meant
When I recall Your call, I feel, so small
Lord, what did you see, when you called out for me?
I start losing heart, and then, it comes again
Lifted from despair, by the prayers of someone

Could be I’m losing touch, could be they don’t care
Lord knows I don’t know much, Lord knows I’ve been there
I trip toward my retreat, I fall down at Your feet, get up and try again

There are many times in Youth Ministry that we will question our calling into Youth Ministry. There will be many times when we wonder if we are reaching teens or parents. But through it all, remember that God has called you to use your gifts and talents in the service of His kingdom. Be encouraged that He has called your name, and that He will supply you with the strength you need to keep going, and with other brothers and sisters who will lift you in prayer daily.
